Whilst in Hiroshima, we thought we’d visit one of Japan’s most iconic sights: the floating torii (Shinto shrine gate) of Itsukushima-jinja. After a 20 minute walk from our apartment, a 20 min JR line journey (not sure we’ve mentioned the JR network yet, perhaps deserving of a separate post!) and a 10 min ferry ride, we witnessed sweeping views of the island, headed up with the stand-out orange torii, which appears to float on the sea.
We’d read a lot about the island, but despite knowing it was a star tourist attraction we’re surprised by the number of tourists and the amount of touristy shops. Perhaps after dark, when the visitors have gone, the island may sparkle its magic, but alas we didn’t have time to test this. Maybe we’d also been spoilt viewing the more unspoilt islands off Okayama a few days ago?
We like to get off the beaten track, so finding a secret cafe with a typical Japanese garden and cute wooden toilet cubicles (!) was cool!
